Complete guide on black gold: the precious metal revolutionizing jewelry
Black gold, this precious metal with a mysterious look, redefines the codes of contemporary jewelry. With its dark and elegant shine, it attracts more and more followers, whether it's rings, wedding bands or personalized jewelry. But what is black gold? Why is it so popular? And how to maintain it? Celinni, a diamond house since 1967, guides you through this complete article on black gold.
What is black gold?
A modern definition
Contrary to what its name might suggest, black gold is not a metal extracted directly from the earth. It is yellow or white gold transformed to obtain a characteristic black hue, thanks to specific processes.
Black gold manufacturing techniques
- Black rhodium plating : A thin layer of black rhodium, a metal from the platinum family, is applied to the gold to give it its dark and shiny appearance.
- Ruthenium treatment : This ruthenium-based plating, another rare metal, enhances the durability and aesthetics of black gold.
- Chemical oxidation : A chemical process that creates variations in textures and deep black shades.
Composition and characteristics
- Durability : Thanks to its 18-carat gold base (750 thousandths), black gold is both shock-resistant and durable over time.
- Unique aesthetics : Its dark and metallic shine makes it an ideal choice for modern and bold designs.
- Customization : Black gold is perfect for creating custom-made jewelry, especially wedding bands and engagement rings.
Why choose black gold jewelry?
A contemporary and bold aesthetic
Black gold is for those looking for jewelry that is out of the ordinary. Its dark anthracite gray hue adds a touch of mystery and sophistication to each piece.
Ideal for men's jewelry

An alternative for modern couples
Black gold wedding bands are a rising trend among couples who wish to honor tradition while adopting a contemporary style.
Black gold versus white gold and yellow gold
Visual differences
- Yellow Gold: Timeless and traditional, but sometimes perceived as classic.
- White Gold: Known for its bright and sober elegance.
- Black Gold: Unique and avant-garde, ideal for bold designs.
Maintenance and durability
Although durable, black gold can patina over time, revealing a grayish or golden hue under the rhodium layer. Regular maintenance, including re-rhodium plating, is necessary to maintain its initial appearance.
Versatility of designs
Black gold harmoniously matches with precious stones such as white diamonds, blue sapphires or rubies for both modern and luxurious creations.
