WHAT ARE THE COLOR SPECTRUMS OF SAPPHIRE?

The sapphire is the most sought-after gemstone by our customers and therefore, many people have questions about the sapphire such as the color of the sapphire or how to choose a sapphire.

The sapphire is a gemstone known to all, it is a variety of corundum gem that can present many colors. The sapphire has a great reputation in jewelries around the world, which explains why it comes just after the diamond in the classification of precious stones. The name of this stone comes from the Greek "Sappheiros", which means: blue stone.

Indeed, the blue sapphire is the most known, even though there are many other colors. That's why today we are going to ask ourselves: What are the color spectrums of the sapphire?

What is a color spectrum?

What is a color spectrum?

Light is an essential ingredient in the formation of color. Light is composed of electromagnetic waves of different lengths. Color is defined as the quality of light reflected by the surface of an object. When the waves of light stimulate the retina of your eyes and are interpreted by your brain, you perceive the sensation of color.

Color spectra therefore come from light spectra, in which two families are distinguished:
 ● continuous spectra: When we decompose the white light of the Sun with a prism, we can see a range of colors. We therefore say that white light has a continuous spectrum, because we can move from one color to another without interruption.
 ● discontinuous spectra: Most electric lamps have a spectrum focused on a wavelength (e.g., LEDs light up blue). They are therefore discontinuous because they only reflect one color, not all.
A color spectrum is therefore nothing more than a reflection of the light absorbed by an object.

Where does the color of stones come from?

Where does the color of stones come from?

The color of a gemstone is an important factor that contributes to its beauty and value. Around the world, gemstones of all colors can be found. The color of a gemstone is caused by the absorption of certain wavelengths of visible light by the gemstone. This absorption is caused by the atoms of certain chemical elements present in the gemstone. There are mainly 8 coloring chemical elements: titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, and copper. The color in gemstones is therefore due to the interaction of light with the different chemical elements.

What colors can sapphires have?

What colors can sapphires have?

When we use the word sapphire without naming a color, it is necessarily a blue stone.

However, it is important to note that not all sapphires are blue and many people are unaware of this. Sapphire is one of the varieties of stones that comes in the most colors:
 ● Blue: Blue is the most known color of sapphire, and elle has several variations. Elle can range from light blue tinted with gray or purple, to a very deep blue. The rarest and most sought-after tones are royal blue and cornflower blue.
 ● Pink: The pink sapphire is also highly sought after in jewelry. Its color can range from pastel pink to the deepest pink.
 ● Yellow: Yellow sapphires are less sought after in jewelry, as their crystallization is often less bright and less clear than other sapphires.
 ● Orange: Natural orange sapphires have become very rare. In their natural state, stones are more often yellow than orange.
 ● Purple: When the purple color is pronounced, purple sapphires are highly sought after, as it is rare for purple sapphires to be of a clear color. Many stones have a blue color tinted with purple, but sapphires with a dominant purple color are very rare.
 ● Green: Green is the least sought-after color of sapphire, the stones are most often a yellowish green, unable to compete with gems such as the emerald.

WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLOR TO CHOOSE FOR A SAPPHIRE?

The most beautiful color for a sapphire is the 'velvety blue' color that is commercially called: Cornflower, Royal Blue, Peacock ...

In order to obtain these most prized shades, the sapphire must not contain too much iron, so sapphires originating from Thailand or Australia will always be too dark.

Another color highly prized by the most discerning connoisseurs is the Padparadsha sapphire, which can only be found in Sri Lanka and means 'Lotus Flower'. Their prices can far exceed those of the most beautiful other colors.

It is also possible to find pink, yellow, green, black sapphires which are less popular with the general public, but just as sought after by traders and connoisseurs.
