Why do we laser engrave diamonds?

Engrave a diamond

You certainly know about engraving on jewelry, the one that can be requested on wedding rings or other jewelry. This engraving is done on the alloy. But there is another even more exceptional place that can be engraved. It is the diamond.

Did you know that it is possible to engrave a diamond? This stone, which is the hardest of the precious stones, can indeed be engraved.

What is engraving?

Engraving is primarily an art that involves incising grooves on a hard surface. Patterns can then be drawn on various surfaces such as metals or even glass.
This art has always been used to produce images on paper. Many craftsmen used engraving: glass engravers, armorers or goldsmiths. One of the essential tools for this art is the burin. This tool is used both for hand engraving and with a machine.

Today, there are many tools for engraving various objects. Laser engraving is a cutting-edge technology. Indeed, elle allows engraving any type of materials including diamond.

This technology has revolutionized the way diamonds are identified.

How has laser engraving revolutionized the way diamonds are identified?

Each diamond is unique, two diamonds will never have the same characteristics or inclusions (internal features of the stone during its crystallization).
As each diamond is different, it is difficult to correctly identify them. Usually diamonds must undergo certification, they are identified, their inclusions are counted, the color of the stone is determined... This certification is often done by independent laboratories like the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America).

Once the certification is done the diamond is identified. The stone is then accompanied by a paper that will prove its authenticity. This is actually the diamond's ID card but we call it a certificate. All certified diamonds are assigned a certification number.

Before laser engraving, only the paper certificate allowed the diamond to be quickly identified. It was still necessary to check the certificate's claims about the diamond under a magnifying glass to avoid mistaking the stone.
With the arrival of this cutting-edge technology, we can directly know if it is indeed the right diamond. Indeed, the majority of certified diamonds are now laser engraved.
This inscription allows for a simple and quick identification of the said diamond in its life cycle: when creating a new setting or for example to be certain that the diamond in question is indeed the one corresponding to the certificate.

(Fun fact: it should be understood that an engraving on a diamond is not visible to the naked eye. It can only be seen with a magnifying glass. The engraving is done on what is called the girdle. This is the area between the upper and lower part of the diamond).

Engrave on your diamond

It is possible to engrave something other than the certificate number on the diamond. Indeed, on the hardest stone in the world, the stone that is the very symbol of love, you can engrave whatever you like on it.

Imagine giving a unique diamond to the love of your life. This diamond will be engraved with a phrase, a word, or even a date. This engraving will be personal and will make the diamond even more beautiful and sentimental. With this engraving, even if you choose a ring that may resemble others or even be identical, elle makes the jewel unique as it can already be.

The engraving

If this diamond is on an engagement ring, your fiancée will be even happier to discover this engraving. You have engraved "I love you", "You and Me forever" or even your first names and this ring will be even more special. The main idea is first to personalize a diamond ring with whatever comes to mind (symbol, numbers, patterns...).

This personalization also has an emotional aspect that is connected to the personality of the person to whom you are giving this ring, also if you are giving it to yourself!

Deciding to personalize the engraving on your diamond is also a way to differentiate it from others. The personalized engraving will replace the certificate number, so its identification will be even simpler!

Warning: this service, priced between 120 and 160 euros, will partially remove the interest of the international certificate. Contact us for more information.
